Sunu Band Quick Start Guide

Welcome

Thank you for choosing Sunu. This quick start guide is intended to help you to become familiar with the Sunu Band & Tag and it’s basic operation. The quick start guide will show you the following:

  1. What’s included in the box.
  2. Parts of the Sunu Band
  3. Recharging your Sunu Band
  4. Wearing the Sunu Band
  5. The Sunu Band Interface
  6. Basic Operation (Navigating the menu, apps and HOME).

After reviewing the Quick Start Guide, you take the full tutorials in our Product Guide and Mobility Guide.

Included in the Box

The following is included within the Sunu band box:

  • One (1) Sunu Band Sonar smart-watch
  • One (1) micro-charger
  • One (1) micro USB to USB cable (for the micro-charger)
  • One (1) Sunu Tag article tracker (if purchased as a kit).

You will also find the following inserts with braille.

  • A welcome insert with inspirational quote.
  • One English and Spanish insert directing you to the tutorials page http://tutorial.sunu.io

Getting to Know Sunu Band

Sunu Band is a multifunctional smart-watch that has a built-in sonar sensor. The Sunu Band enables you to:

  • Tell time with the vibration watch.
  • The sonar sensor enables you to perceive objects or obstacles that are within your environment.
  • Connect with Sunu Tags to track and find your personal articles.
  • Connect to the Sunu mobile app (coming soon).

It is important that you familiarize yourself with the different parts of the Sunu Band. The image below shows the parts of the Sunu Band as viewed from its side, top and bottom.

Parts of the Sunu Band:

A: Sonar Sensor

The sonar sensor is a round metal cylinder that is discreetly embed within the Sunu Band. The sensor is a transducer that emits ultrasounds as well as detects the echo or reflected sound-waves that bounce back from objects or obstacles that are within your environment.

B. Buttons 1 and 2

Sunu Band has two (2) buttons which are located at one side of the device. The buttons allow the user to interact with the Sunu band interface. Button 1 or HOME button is closest to the sonar sensor, while Button 2 is furthest away from the sonar sensor.

C: Touch Pad

The touch pad is the flat top surface of the Sunu Band. The touch pad allows users to interact with the interface.

D: Charging Inlets

The charging inlets are located underneath the Sunu Band (on the opposite side to where the sonar sensor is located. These inlets connect to the micro-charger and are used for re-charging the Sunu Band’s battery.

E: Standard Watch Belt and Buckle

Sunu band come with a standard watch belt and buckle that is hypoallergenic. You may customize or change your belt by visiting any jeweler.


Charging the Sunu Band

Sunu Band has a rechargeable battery. Its battery life is 1-2 days depending on use. Sunu Band will reach full charge within 2-3 hours. You should re-charge your device when you first receive it.

The following is needed to charge up the Sunu Band:

  • Micro-charger: (included in the box).
  • Micro USB to USB cable: (included in the box).
  • USB power adaptor: Not included. you may use any USB power adaptor or power hub.

The Micro-Charger:

The micro-charger is shown in the following diagram:

A. Micro-USB connection:

Connect the micro-USB side of the cable to the Micro-USB inlet of the Micro-charger.

B. Charging Pins:

The charging pins align to and connect with the charging inlets that are underneath the Sunu Band.

Connecting the Micro-Charger to Sunu Band

The image below shows how to align and connect the micro-charger with the Sunu Band.

Step 1:

Align the micro-charger pins with the charging socket underneath the Sunu Band. The flat-side should face towards the sonar and the curved or beveled edge should face the curved side underneath the Sunu Band. 

Step 2:

Gently press the micro-charger until it is securely in place. 

Step 3.

Plug USB cable to USB power adaptor. Make sure that the Micr-USB side is plugged into the micro-charger. Allow 2-3 hours for device to reach full charge.


Wearing the Sunu Band

You can wear Sunu Band on either hand, just like any watch. Wear your Sunu Band with the sonar sensor on the same side as your thumb, as shown in the image below. Then adjust the belt and buckle until the Sunu Band is securely around your wrist.

The Sunu Band Interface

Sunu Band’s interface works similarly to a smartphone or tablet. The physical interactions with the device are primarily done through the following:

  1. The two buttons (button 1 and 2) which are both located at one of the sides of the Sunu Band. Button 1 or HOME Button is located closest to the sonar sensor, while button 2 is furthest away from the sensor.
  2. The touch-pad, which is the flat top surface of the device.

The Buttons:

The two buttons are located on one of the sides of the Sunu Band. The two ways in which we interact with the buttons are as follow:

  • Press — Push and immediately release the button.
  • Press+Hold (press and hold) — Push button and maintain pressed for 3-5 seconds before releasing.

The touch Pad

You interact with the touch pad just like you would with any smartphone or tablet. The two primary kinds of interactions you will be doing with the touch pad are:

I. Touch Interactions:

A. Tap+Hold (Tap and Hold) — Place one or two fingers on the touch-pad and hold for 3-5 seconds, and then release.

B. Double-Tap — Touch twice on the touch-pad with either one of two fingers.

II. Swipe Interactions:

A. Swipe Up — Slide a finger in the direction that is going away from the sonar sensor.

B. Swipe-Down — Slide finger in the direction towards the sonar sensor.


Basic Operation and Use

Sunu Band’s functions and interface work similarly to most smartphones. Sunu Band’s features and functions are organized within apps.

The indented green text are practice examples or exercises. Please follow along with the guide. 

HOME

Just like a smartphone, Sunu Band has a Home (or standby) mode which allows the device to conserve power. Sunu Band’s HOME mode is the vibratory watch, which allows us to know the time by vibration patterns.

Pressing button 1 or the home button always takes back to the HOME. When you press button 1, you will immediately feel a soft short pulse to indicate that you are now at HOME.

The Main Menu

The apps or functions are organized within the main menu. The main menu allows you to navigate between apps and select or enter into a specific app.

Press button 2 to open the main menu. You will immediately feel a strong short pulse to indicate that the main menu is now open.

| Practice: Press button 2 to open the menu.

Your Sunu Band will have two apps within its main menu. The two (2) included are:

  • App #1 – Sonar or Obstacle Detection App — this app activates the sonar sensor to assist the user in navigating his/her environment.
  • App #2 – Sunu Tag Article Tracking App — This app activates a Sunu Tag and allows users to track and find personal items.

Navigating the Main Menu

Users can navigate the main menu by swiping on the touch-pad.

  • Swiping-Up: Moves the selector up by one app. For example, swiping-up can move the selector from app 1 to app 2.
  • Swiping-Down: Decreases or moves the selector down by one app. For example, swiping down can move the selector from app 3 to app 2.

You feel the Sunu Band pulse when you switch or move the selector between apps. Sunu Band will pulse:

  • Once – Indicate that app #1 is selected
  • Twice – indicates that app #2 is selected.

*In the future, new apps will be available for your Sunu Band. The Sunu Band menu will then expand to include these new apps. 

Exiting the Main Menu

Press button or HOME button to exit the main menu, without entering into an app. Remember that you will feel a soft short pulse to indicate that you are now at HOME.

Entering into an App

From within the main menu, select the app that you want to enter. Next double-tap on the touch pad to enter into that app.

Exiting an App

We can exit an app by:

  • Pressing button 1 or HOME button – takes us back to HOME. you will feel a soft short pulse to indicate that you are at home
  • Pressing button 2 – takes us back to the menu. you will feel a strong short pulse to indicate that you are back in the main menu.

Configuring an App

Each app may be configured by the user. When in an app, you may enter into its configuration mode by doing a press+hold on button 2 for 3-5 seconds. You will feel a long pulse to indicate that you are now in the configuration mode.

Saving Changes and Exiting the Configuration Mode

  • Press+Hold Button 2 (for 3-5 seconds) to SAVE changes made when in the configuration mode
  • Press button 2 or button 1 to exit the configuration mode without saving the changes made

Sunu Band Apps

Lets become familiar with using each of the Sunu Band’s apps. We will learn the basic use of the following:

  1. HOME – Vibratory Watch
  2. App #1 – Sonar & Obstacle Detection App
  3. App #2 – Sunu Tag article tracking app

HOME – Vibratory Watch

Sunu Band’s vibration watch allows you to know the time via a series of short or long pulses. You may choose to read the hour or the minutes depending on how you swipe on the touch pad. To begin reading the time:

  1. Press button 1 or HOME button. (you will feel a soft short pulse to indicate that you are now at HOME.

Reading the hour:

Swipe down on the touch pad to read the hour. You will immediately feel a series of short and or long pulses to indicate the hour:

For every:

  • Short Pulse – we add +1 hour to the time.
  • Long Pulse: We add +5 hours to the time.

Reading the Minutes:

Swipe Up on the touch pad to read the minutes. Now the minutes information is parsed (or communicated) to you in the following way:

  1. Sunu Band reads how many Tens (10’s) of minutes have passed the hour, i.e. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 00 (top of the hour).
  2. PAUSE
  3. Sunu Band read how many individual minutes between 0 – 9 are passed the hour.

We combine these two information to get the precise minutes. Here is how we interpret the vibration code for each:

1. Tens (10’s) of minutes passed the hour:

For every:

  • Short Pulse: we add +10 minutes to the time.
  • Long Pulse: We add +50 minutes to the time.
  • Pause: – indicates that the time is one the hour or less than 10 minutes of have passed the hour.

2. Getting the individual Minutes:

Now we’ll get more precise to the individual minutes, i.e. 0-9. For every:

  • Short Pulse: we add +1 minute to the time.
  • Long Pulse: We add +5 minute to the time.
  • Pause: Indicates that the time is exactly on a multiple of ten passed the hour.

Setting the time

You can set the time by adjusting the hour and/or minutes individually. First, press button 1.

I. Setting the Hour

  1. Swipe down on the touch pad to have Sunu Band read the hour.
  2. Press+Hold button 2 for 3-5 seconds to enter into the configuration mode which will allow you to adjust the hour. As soon as you release button 2, you will feel a long pulse to indicate that you’ve entered into the configuration mode.

To change the hour:

  • Swipe Up on the touch pad to increase the time by +1 hour.
  • Swipe Down on the touch pad to decrease the time by -1 hour.

Important – Sunu Band will read the new hour after every swipe on the touch pad.

To Save and confirm your new selection:

  • Press+Hold Button 2 for 3-5 seconds. You will immediately feel a long pulse to indicate that your changes are saved.

You’ve now exited the configuration mode for the hour.

II. Setting the Minutes:

  1. Swipe up on the touch pad to have Sunu Band read the minutes.
  2. Press+Hold button 2 for 3-5 seconds to enter into the configuration mode which will allow you to adjust the minutes. As soon as you release button 2, you will feel a long pulse to indicate that you’ve entered into the configuration mode.

To change the minutes:

  • Swipe Up on the touch pad to increase the time by +1 minute.
  • Swipe Down on the touch pad to decrease the time by -1 minute.

Important – Sunu Band will read the new minutes after every swipe on the touch pad.

To Save and confirm your new selection:

  • Press+Hold Button 2 for 3-5 seconds. You will immediately feel a long pulse to indicate that your changes are saved.

You’ve now exited the configuration mode for the minutes.


App #1 – Sonar & Obstacle Detection App

The Sonar and Obstacle Detection app allows us to detect/sense objects or obstacles that within our environment using the Sunu Band’s sonar sensor and haptic vibration feedback.

Our mobility guide will introduce you to the principals and practice of echolocation and detecting objects with the Sunu Band. 

This app allows you to:

  • Activate the sonar sensor and vibration feedback.
  • Switch between sonar modes
  • Adjust the intensity of the vibratory feedback within the app’s configuration mode.

Entering into the Sonar & Obstacle Detection App

  1. Press button 2 to open the main menu
  2. From the main menu, swipe up or down on the touch pad to move the selector to app #1. The Sunu Band provides one short pulse to indicate that the selector is on app #1.
  3. Double tap on the touch pad to enter or activate the app.

Entering into the app activates the sonar sensor and vibratory feedback. Depending on how you are aiming the Sunu Band’s sonar sensor (or how you are holding the device), you may feel vibration pulses. Simply aim the sonar away from you, making sure there are no objects/ obstacles adjacent to the sensor.

Switching Between Sonar Modes

The Sunu Band has two sonar operating modes:

  1. Long Range mode: allows you to sense object as far as 16 ft or 5.5 meters.
  2. Short Range mode: allows you to sense objects or obstacles as far as 4-5ft or 1.5 meters.

Swiping up or down on the touch pad allows us to switch between modes.

  • One short pulse – Indicates long range mode is on
  • Two short pulses – indicates short range mode is on

Configuring the Vibration Feedback Intensity Level

You can adjust the vibration feedback intensity level from within the app. There are three intensity levels to choose from: Hard, Medium and Soft.

To enter into the configuration mode:

  1. Make sure that you’ve entered into the Sonar & obstacle Detection App.
  2. Press+hold button 2 for 3-5 seconds. As soon as you release button 2, you will feel a long pulse to indicate that you are now in the configuration mode.

within the configuration mode, select the desired vibration intensity by:

  • Swiping up on the touch pad: increase the vibration intensity
  • Swiping down on the touch pad: decreases the vibration intensity.

Saving your selection

  • Press+hold button 2 to save and confirm your selection. As soon as you release button 2, you will feel a long pulse to indicate that your selection is saved.

You return back to the app immediately after saving your selection.

Exit Configuration without saving: simply press button 2 to return to the app or press button 1 to exit completely and return to HOME without saving your changes.

Exiting the App

  • Press button 1 – to return to HOME.
  • Press button 2 – to return to the main menu.

App #2 – Sunu Tag Article Tracker

The Sunu Tag is a personal article tracker which works with your Sunu Band via bluetooth. You can attach a Sunu Tag to your keys, purse, book bag or other personal articles. A Tag is included with the purchase of your Sunu Band kit. In the future, you will be able to pair multiple Tags with your Sunu Band. The Tag’s battery last up to one (1) year and can easily be replaced.

You track and find your tagged item by entering into the Sunu Tag app (App#2). From within the app you may:

  • Track your tagged item with Sunu Band – Once you’re within a certain range, Sunu Band will begin to pulse. The vibration becomes more frequent as you get closer to the Tag.
  • Activate the Tag’s Audible Alarm – once you are within range, you may activate an audible alarm melody to help you quickly find your tagged item.

Using the Tag for the First Time – Pairing the Tag

You will need to pair or sync your Tag with your Sunu Band. This only needs to be done once. To pair or sync your Tag with your Sunu Band:

Enter into the Sunu Tag App

The Tag App is the second or App 2 within the main menu. To enter into the Tag App from HOME:

  1. Press button 2 to open the main menu.
  2. Swipe up (or down) on the touch pad to move the selector to the second app within the main menu. (you will feel two pulses to indicate that the selector is on app #2.
  3. Double Tap on the touch pad to enter into the Tag app.
  4. Place your Tag on top of the touch pad.

When you place the Tag on top of the touch pad (lying flat agains the touch pad surface), the Sunu Band begins the pairing process. This will only take a minute.

  1. You will feel continuous short pulses to indicate that the Tag is now paired with your Sunu Band.
  2. Now remove your Tag from the touch pad surface and place it nearby your Sunu Band.
  3. Double Tap on the Touch Pad to activate the Tag’s audible alarm.
  4. You should hear the nearby Tag.
  5. Press button 1 or 2 to de-activate the Tag.
  6. You are now ready to use the Tag.

Calling a Sunu Tag from your Sunu Band

Now that your Tag is synced with your Sunu Band, you can ‘call’ your Tag at anytime by entering into the Sunu Tag app.

  1. Press button 2 to open the main menu.
  2. Swipe up (or down) on the touch pad to move the selector to the second app within the main menu. (you will feel two pulses to indicate that the selector is on app #2.
  3. Double Tap on the touch pad to enter into the Tag app.

 

Switching Between Tracking and Audible Mode

Sunu Band begins tracking the selected Tag. In the tracking mode, Sunu band will begin pulsing as soon as it’s within range of the Tag. The vibration pulses will become more frequent as you get closer to your Tag.

  • Double Tap on the touch pad to switch between tracking and audible alarm mode.

When you switch to the Audible alarm mode, your Tag’s alarm will activate when you are within range.

Deactivate or Turning OFF the Tag

  • Press button 1 – to return to HOME
  • Press button 2 to return to the main menu.

Tag Selection Menu (coming soon).

In the near future you will be able to pair or sync multiple Tags with your Sunu Band. You will be able to soon manage your Tags within the Sunu Tag app. The app will soon include a Tag Selection menu, where you will be able to choose and active the Tag you want to find.

Once you enter into the Tag app, you land on the Tag Selection Menu. To select a Tag:

  • Swipe Up or Down on the touch pad in order to select a Tag.
  • Double Tap to activate the selected Tag.

Since only one Tag is paired with your Sunu Band, you device will skip the Tag selection menu and automatically selects and activates the Tag.
